Week of September 24, 2010

What a great week!!!  I am thoroughly enjoying this school year, and I pray that your children are as well!  We honored a new All Star student on Friday! (video and pics below).  On Tuesday night, we had a PTA meeting and Back to School night.  At the PTA meeting, members of the 600 Club received their plaques for scoring a 600 on one or more SOL tests last year.  During Back to School night (pictures below), I passed around a couple of I-pads for parents and students to play with.  I am not sure when we will be receiving them, but they will be a tremendous asset to our classroom.  I'm excited!!  =)  During this meeting, we also had parents write goals for their children and Mrs. Stovall discussed our "Eggs"traordinary night and when that will take place.  Sounds like tons of fun!!!

September 17, 2010

This week was a great one!  We had tons of fun learning our vocabulary with the song  We've Got Talent.  We are still learning it, but it is helping us to learn 10 new vocabulary words and it is helping us with our fluency.  I will post a video of our progress at the end of the unit.

We also honored another ALL-STAR student.  This week's honoree was Haylee.  She was nominated by Kailynn because she's nice, among other reasons.  We are very proud of Haylee and pray that she will continue to set the standard as an ALL-STAR student.

A Virginia Studies test was given on Unit 1!  Most students did very well.  We will begin Unit 2 on Virginia's climate and Indians this week.  In Math, we are working on rounding numbers and in Language Arts, we are reading Because of Winn Dixie.  It is a very sweet book!  I encourage families to read/discuss it with your children.

Friday, September 10, 2010

Today, we started by having a 5th grade discussion about the events of September 11, 2001. Mrs. Stovall and I felt it was important to share with our students information about this infamous day in American history.  We told them what we knew and shared a slideshow of pictures.  Then, we listened to (and some sang) God Bless the USA.  It was very touching to hear the students' comments and to listen to them sing.  Even though they were so young when this happened, they are very interested and concerned.

We also honored our next ALL-STAR student.  It was A.J. and he was nominated by Brooke.

Friday was also Grandparent's Day for our 5th graders.  We were very blessed to have many grandparents and parents come and eat lunch with us on Friday.

And my grandparents were able to come and eat with Drew on Thursday.  Mrs. Stovall says they bring out the 10-year-old in me!  I guess it never hurts to stay young!

September 3, 2010

First, the edublog site is not being cooperative and doesn't provide the space that I am going to need for helping you keep up with your child during their 5th grade year at Sanville.  So, I am moving back here.  The link to the other blog is :

We had a wonderful week!  We traveled to Magna Vista on Wednesday for an amazing writing workshop with Erik Cork.  We learned a plethora of new information (and new words) and had a great time!  On Friday we were able to honor another ALL-Star Student.  It was Michael and he was nominated by Adam.  You may view the video below.

Here is a picture of our ALL-Star student this week.  (right)

Here are some pictures of us having fun during Virginia Studies.  We are making 5 regions booklets!
